The Mangaluru-based Canara Plastic Manufacturers’ and Traders’ Association (CPMTA) has opened a plastic and dry waste collection centre in the city.
BA Nazeer, President of CPMTA, said there is a market for plastic waste. However, the problem with plastic waste is its collection process.
He said the rules related to plastic waste management stipulate the urban local bodies to set up such collection centres.
Thanking the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) for providing land for setting up the collection centre at Kadri area in the city, he said such centres would help collect plastic waste at one place, and create awareness about the market for waste.
Stating that all types of dry plastic waste materials such as carry bags, plastic bottles etc will be collected at the centre, Nazeer said that assorted plastic waste would be purchased at ₹15 a kg and milk pouch at ₹20 a kg.
Quoting the statistics provided by MCC, he said the total solid waste production in Mangaluru is around 200 tonnes a day. Of this, a maximum of two tonnes a day may be carry bags and milk pouches etc, he said.
Nazeer suggested that MCC set up such centres in other parts of the city, as it will help create awareness on the market for plastic waste.
