All States and Union Territories have been asked to consider setting up State Water Missions to promote integrated water management as well as conservation.
A nodal agency at the State-level will go a long way in spearheading the National Water Mission (NWM) in each State within a reasonable time frame, the Water Resources Minister, Harish Rawat, said in a letter to all Chief Ministers.
In the letter, Rawat informed States about the launch of the NWM as part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
He said one of the goals of the NWM was to increase water use efficiency by 20 per cent across sectors, such as agriculture, industry, drinking water in rural and urban areas.
