A multi-pronged strategy has been put in place to drive resurgence of coir sector in the State, according to Adoor Prakash, Minister for Revenue and Coir.

The strategy aims at raised quality level, better packaging, superior technology and strong marketing, he said at the Coir Kerala 2012 international trade fair at Alappuzha.

TARGETS FOR YEAR

Presiding over a buyer-seller meet held as part of the event, the minister said that these events help bring industry players together.

This is vital for achieving this year’s target of Rs 1,000 crore in exports and Rs 2,000 crore in domestic revenues, he added.

In a message read out at the ceremony, P. K. Kunhalikkutty, minister for industries and IT, said that the coir industry needed to focus on product diversification.

It should also seek to expand domestic market, and added that any effort in that direction would have the full support of the State Government.

K.M. Chandrasekhar, vice-chairman of State Planning Board, inaugurated the buyer-seller meet.

CONSUMER LIKES

This is an opportunity to develop a stronger and larger market base for coir products, he said.

“We should be able to identify consumer preferences worldwide, what new products to develop, how to refine existing ones, who competitors are and technologies we can access globally,” he said.

Meanwhile, official sources said transactions worth nearly Rs 100 crore were consummated at the buyer-seller meet.

A considerable volume centred round value-added products such as rubberised coir.

GOOD BUSINESS

Interior decoration products too have generated good business in just two days of the Coir Kerala event, the sources added.

State department of coir development is organising the six-day event while National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) is coordinating the fair.

More than 80 delegates from overseas and over 125 participants from all over India took part in the buyer-seller meet.

G. Sudhakaran, MLA, gave the keynote address while Rani George, special secretary, department of coir, welcomed the delegates.
