The Telangana Assembly has passed a resolution on Saturday, rejecting the Central Ordinance on Polavaram. The Ordinance, issued last month, transfers several villages in seven mandals of Khammam district (Telangana) to Andhra Pradesh.
Broadly, these were the villages that would be submerged when the multi-purpose irrigation project is completed. The Centre brought the Ordinance, with a view to avoiding friction between the two States.
The Telangana Government and people’s organisations have been opposing the Ordinance and demanding the Centre to withdraw it.
The first ever session of the new State has passed a resolution opposing the ordinance. The Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has termed the decision to sever the villages from Telangana as unconstitutional.
