The 282 seats that the BJP won in the Lok Sabha election accounted for 17.16 crore votes across the country. This is a 118.87 per cent increase over the 7.84 crore votes that the party had won in 2009.

In terms of vote share, the party cornered 31 per cent of the total votes polled in 2014, up from 18.80 per cent.

In comparison, the Congress managed to get only 10.69 crore votes on an all-India basis during these elections. This is 1.22 crores votes fewer than in 2009.

However, in terms of the percentage of votes that the Congress got, the figure went down to 19.3 as compared to 28.55 per cent in the last elections.

Among the other parties, the AIADMK, which won 38 seats this year, polled over 1. 8 crore votes, getting a vote share of 3.3 per cent. The Trinamool Congress, which won 34 seats, polled over 2.21 crore votes, getting a vote share of 3.8 per cent. During the 2009 polls, it had seen over 1.33 crore people vote for the party which helped it win 19 seats.

The TDP, which secured 16 seats, polled over 1.40 crore votes or 2.5 per cent of the total votes this time. The NCP won six seats, securing 1.6 per cent of the vote share with 86.35 lakh people voting for the party. During the 2009 polls, the party had a vote share of 2.04 per cent with over 85 lakh people voting for the nine seats that it had won.

The YSR Congress, which made its debut in these elections, won nine Lok Sabha seats, winning close to 1.4 crore votes with a vote share of 2.5 per cent.

The AAP, which too was contesting the Lok Sabha polls for the first time, managed to garner a 2 per cent vote share.

But getting high percentages of votes has not helped all the parties. The BSP had 2.29 crore people voting for it and was in the third position in terms of percentage of votes polled after the BJP and the Congress but failed to win a single seat.
