Thiruvananthapuram-based Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has acquired Al Shifa Hospital, Perinthalmanna.

KIMS Group Chairman MI Sahadulla and Al Shifa Hospital Chairman PA Uneen signed an agreement in Kozhikode on Monday.

Al Shifa Hospital was established in 1989 as an NRI venture with 600 beds. It is equipped with advanced trauma care facilities supported by more than 40 medical and surgical specialties.

A KIMS spokesman said that the takeover of Al Shifa would make KIMS Healthcare Group the largest corporate healthcare network in the State with 1,650 beds. Ongoing expansion plans will take the figure to 2,500 beds and employing 10,000 medical and non-medical professionals, he added.

Social initiatives

The group hopes to provide quality healthcare at lower costs to the masses through public-private participation, preventive healthcare and promotion of medical tourism.

The group will also extend social initiatives such as free heart surgery for the poor; knee replacement for retired school teachers; and cancer relief programmes.

KIMS Al Shifa Hospital will focus on comprehensive healthcare under one roof with special focus on cancer care, liver transplant, interventional radiology, laryngology and 128 slice CT scan. This is expected to boost the number of international patients visiting Malabar region for quality and high-end medical care, he added.
