As the delay in taking a decision on the formation of a separate Telangana State has started creating trouble within the Congress, the party on Wednesday reiterated that it was not against its formation. The party said it was in the process of taking a decision on the matter.
The announcement comes in the wake of the decision by Congress MPs from Telangana region to resign from Parliament if the formation of a separate State is delayed further. There are also indications that the top party leadership has urged the Centre to expedite the process of carving out a separate State. “Congress is not against the formation of Telangana State. We are in the process of taking a decision, but the formalities have to be completed,” party spokesperson P.C Chacko told reporters here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, three Congress MPs from Telangana region have reached the Capital to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi to submit their resignations. Chacko said both the Congress President and the Home Minister had already made their position clear on the issue, and it was only a question of time when the decision would be announced.
When asked whether the party was supporting the formation of a separate State of Telangana, Chacko agreed and said the party had taken a position. “Our party position is very clear. But whatever the decision, it has to fulfil some constitutional obligations,” he added.
