Workers engaged in coir spinning, defibering and allied jobs and falling both under the public and private sectors have been granted an extended September 30 deadline to open bank accounts.

An official said here that an income support programme being implemented in these sectors would require that the State government directly debit the accounts with a fixed percentage share of the wages payable.

This essentially presupposes existence of bank account for each worker. The spokesman clarified that those without a bank account would not be eligible to receive the government share made available as part of the income support scheme.
