Hinting at the possibility of a post-poll pact with the Congress, DMK chief M Karunanidhi said on Wednesday the party will help the Congress even if it does not forgive it.
Launching his campaign with a public meeting here, Karunanidhi said the Congress had ‘ungratefully’ broken ties with the DMK in the wake of the 2G spectrum scandal. It had been vindictive and had distanced itself from its ally and made the DMK a scapegoat, he added.
But nobody has been able to prove any wrongdoing by DMK MP and then Telecommunications Minister A Raja, he pointed out.
It is this attitude that is causing the Congress to lose ground in Tamil Nadu and other States.
But the DMK will support the Congress ‘not for votes’ but on policy ground, Karunanidhi said. “Policy alone is important to me, not children or family,” he remarked.
A secular India is important for the wellbeing of the people, the 90-year-old leader said. He recalled that he had organised the first public meeting at this same venue in Chintadripet, in the heart of the city, to condemn the demolition of Babri Masjid.
The DMK is committed to the unity and harmony of the people, he said, quoting lines from the patriotic Hindi song, Hindustan hai hamara .
Criticises AIADMKHe criticised the AIADMK for undoing the good work of the previous DMK government.
Jayalalithaa’s Government had decided to convert the newly constructed Secretariat into a hospital and had attempted to change the Anna Centenary Library. Continuity in policies is essential for the welfare of the people, he said.
He had continued with and expanded MGR’s novel noon meal scheme, he pointed out.
