Amidst huge hoardings at strategic junctions reminding people to vote during the upcoming Assembly election in Tamil Nadu, comes a reminder with a difference — one like a wedding invitation.

Printed by A Muniyandi, Returning Officer, Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency, the ‘invite’ is an appeal to the voters to not miss the May 16 event. A quick glance at the flier could hoodwink one to believe that he/she is invited to a function.

Printed on a glazed paper against a traditional yellow backdrop, the invitation is bordered at the top with garlands.

The content, in Tamil, says that in this Dhurmukhi (current Tamil year) year, on the third day of (Tamil month) Vaikasi, and the 10{+t}{+h} phase of the moon, in the auspicious time of 7 am to 6 pm, voters are welcome to exercise their franchise in their respective booths with their ‘near and dear ones’.

The invitation says it is issued jointly by the District Collector and District Election Officer Archana Patnaik and Muniyandi.

A punch-line notes that receiving or giving gifts for the function is against law.
