As the dollar breached the ₹66 mark, the Aam Aadmi Party today said if the Union Finance Minister was unable to contain the currency downslide, he should relinquish the post.
The party also attacked the Centre saying instead of getting a boost the economy has taken a hit under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“If Arun Jaitley is not able to perform then he should quit and hand over the responsibility to a more capable person.
“During the polls, the Prime Minister had attacked the then government (led by Manmohan Singh) for the rupee downfall, but now that he is in power for the past 15 months, the currency downfall continues,” AAP leader Ashutosh said.
He added that Modi had promised several reforms to boost the economy, but that has not been able to make any impact on the economy.
“The stock market crashed by 1,000 points today and this is a serious issue. The Prime Minister had promised many second-generation reforms, but that there is no change in the policy that can help give boost to the economy,” he said.
The rupee plunged by 66 paise to fall below the ₹66 level against the dollar for the first time in almost two years in opening trade today on sustained capital outflows even as the US currency weakened overseas.
