Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said on Wednesday that state-owned milk supplier Aavin had procured an all-time high of 27.15 lakh litres of milk in November 2012, and with a series of measures, its sales clocked in excess of Rs 3,500 crore in 2012-13.
Milk procurement on an average was 24.36 lakh litres a day and Aavin had procured 27.15 lakh litres on November 20 last year and the state-owned undertaking was introducing more and more milk-related products, boosting its sales.
“The sales which was Rs 2791 crore in 2011-12, has grown to Rs 3,584 crore,” she said in a suo motu statement in the state Assembly.
The Chief Minister also made a series of announcements for Aavin to the tune of Rs 95.66 crore, including setting up storage, cooling and solidification facilities and procuring new modern equipment.
Further, the government will grant “Star Status” to milk unions to promote better quality and also provide cash incentives.
The top three unions will be given away Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 while seven others will be given Rs 5,000 she added.
In a separate statement, she announced hiking the fixed deposit in banks for girl children.
As part of a scheme to put an end to female infanticide, the government was depositing in FD accounts sums of Rs 22,000 in one girl child only families and Rs 15,200 in the name of each of the two children in such families. The scheme involves returning money to the family with interest after 20 years.
She said the sums were being hiked to Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000. She also reduced the age criteria for women from 20 to 18 years to avail the maturity amount and 30,000 women will benefit this year, she added.
