Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar’s fate would be decided on Friday at the crucial party legislators’ meeting in Mumbai, which would be chaired by party chief Sharad Pawar.

Ajit Pawar had resigned as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday in the wake of the alleged Rs 70,000-crore irrigation scam.

A party spokesperson told Business Line on Thursday that Sharad Pawar would take a final call only after consulting all the legislators and senior leaders of the party. However, the resignation of 19 NCP ministers from the Maharashtra Government has not been accepted.

The party official said that Ajit Pawar is an important asset to the party, and one who should remain in the State Government. All the NCP legislators are strongly in his favour, the official added.

On Thursday , Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan also met Congress party legislators to discuss the situation arising out of the resignation of Ajit Pawar. No decision was taken at the meeting, but the legislators said they would continue to support Chavan.
