Amul fondly remembered its founder Verghese Kurien, Milkman of India, on his second death anniversary on Tuesday.
Kurien, 90, had passed way on September 9, 2012, at Anand. He made Anand his home for life after he landed in the small town on May 13, 1949, as a government employee to look after the operations of a government-owned creamery.
Leaving the government job he joined the Kaira Milk Union in helping farmers in their fight against injustice in the trade of milk. He bequeathed the Amul model to the world that could find solution to hunger and poverty of millions of people empowering them as masters of their destiny, a spokesman of Amul, the milk brand of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), said here.
Kurien served farmers through their collective wisdom and strength, and turned India from a state of deficit and imports into the largest milk producer in the world.
Paying him rich tributes, Amul employees also organized a blood donation camp on the occasion in association with the Red Cross Society of India.
