AP administration gets ready to meet cyclone Helen threat

Andhra Pradesh is gearing up to meet the threat posed by the cyclonic storm ‘Helen’, which lay centred over west central Bay of Bengal — about 430 km east of Kavali and 320 km southeast of Machilipatnam.

The system would further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Ongole around Friday morning.

On request of the State Government, the National Disaster Management Authority has rushed in six relief teams to Ongole (2), Kavali (2), Guntur (1), Krishna (1).

The India Meteorological Department has stated that under its influence rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places would occur over coastal Andhra Pradesh commencing from tonight. Squally winds speed reaching 55 kmph to 65 kmph would be experienced.

The sea condition will be rough to very rough from tomorrow and fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea. The coastal security wing, Marine Police, and also the police were informed to be alert in view of the cyclone and assist the district administration.

Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy who reviewed the situation with the Chief Secretary P.K. Mohanty has directed district collectors to be prepared with medical, food, transport and all the relevant rescue and relief measures.
