The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet is set to meet on May 14, even as controversy rages over the issue whether such a meet can be conducted as the election code is still in force. Originally, the Cabinet meet was scheduled for May 10.

Chief Secretary L.V. Subrahmanyam is reported to have made it clear to officials of the Chief Minister's office that the Cabinet meet can be held, subject to clearance of issues on the agenda by the Election Commission of India, as the code was in force. Therefore, the ECI should be informed at least two days before the meet.

Accordingly, the Cabinet meet was postponed to May 14 from May 10, but some uncertainty still lingers over the issue.

Meanwhile, the Opposition YSR Congress and BJP leaders are condemning "the approach and attitude of the Chief Minister in calling such a meet when the code is in force."

A. Rambabu, the YSR Congress leader, said "the insistence of the Chief Minister on conducting the Cabinet meet at this time really exposes him. He has no respect for the Election Commission and he respects no norms. In any event, any decision taken by the Cabinet now is not binding on anybody."

The State Cabinet wants to discuss the aftermath of cyclone Fani and the heatwave conditions in the state and the requisite measures to prepare for the coming kharif season, it is learnt.
