Power tariff in Andhra Pradesh is amongst the lowest in the country with the average power tariff for the domestic sector at Rs 3.48 per kwh after the recent tariff order.

According to a statement from State Energy Conservation Mission, while in AP the tariff is Rs 3.48 per unit, in Tamil Nadu it is Rs 4.05 per kwh, Karnataka (Rs 4.50), Maharashtra (Rs 6.75), Madhya Pradesh (Rs 4.96), Haryana (Rs 4.98) and Gujarat it is Rs 5.62 per kwh.

IYR Krishna Rao, State Chief Secretary, mentioned that the tariff has been increased by about 5 to 8 per cent with 92 per cent of the consumers of the State unaffected. The average tariff is much lower than the tariff structure in other States.

The Conservation Mission felt that the Self Help Groups (SHGs) at district level may be involved for creating awareness on energy conservation and energy efficiency among power consumers. It was proposed to constitute groups in all the schools in as Energy Conservation Corps on the lines of National Cadet Corps to create awareness on conservation from childhood.

Thus far about 42 lakh LED bulbs have been distributed in the domestic sector and three districts and one lakh LED street lights installed replacing old fitments in urban local bodies as a part of the demand side management initiative.

To bridge the power demand-supply gap, AP Discoms are procuring about 900 mw (21 million units) per day. AP procured 5788 mu during June 2014 and January 2015 at a cost of Rs 3,180 crore.
