The Andhra Pradesh Government has readied a plan to convert the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into energy as part of it Swachh AP plan.
As part of this plan, the State Government will promote MSW to energy projects in Andhra Pradesh by setting up such projects for an aggregate capacity of 130 MW. These will be at locations that are identified by the municipal administration and urban development department.
Swiss challenge process AP DISCOMS will select project developers for the identified locations through a Swiss Challenge (competitive bidding) process.
One such plant will be set up in each district. In this regard, a team of officials led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had visited the Timparpur Okhla Waste Management Company, a waste to energy plant in New Delhi, operated on a public private participation by the Jindal Group, according to a release.
Capacity The current installed capacity of MSW to energy projects in Andhra Pradesh is only 6 MW, as against the estimated potential of 140-160 MW in the State.
A 1 MW waste to energy plant requires around 50-60 tonnes of waste on a daily basis.
