The prospect of a constructive debate and substantial legislative business in the upcoming Budget session of Parliament is once again becoming bleak with the emergence of broad opposition unity against the Centre pushing President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh and the suicide of a Dalit student in Hyderabad.

On both the issues, the ruling BJP is isolated while the principal opposition Congress has managed to rally support from a number of political parties.

Some parties have already warned the BJP of the shadow of Arunachal Pradesh looming over the Budget session. “We will raise these issues in the coming session,” said JD(U) MP KC Tyagi.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also been vocal against what is being viewed as a betrayal of the BJP’s “cooperative federalism” promise.

“Prez Rule in Arunachal. Advaniji was right in saying that there are Emergency like conditions in the country,” tweeted Kejriwal. “Union Cab recommending Prez Rule in Arunachal is shocking. Murder of Constitution on Republic Day eve. BJP lost elections. Now acquiring power through back door,” he tweeted.

National Conference leader and former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, too, found that “there is something deeply upsetting about the way Raj Bhavans are being used to unseat elected governments by encouraging defections.”
