A bandh called to protest against "the injustice done to the state in the Union Budget" and urging the Centre to allocate funds for various projects in the state and honour its promises and commitments made in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, began on Thursday morning in various towns and villages of Andhra Pradesh.
The bandh call was given by the Left parties, but was supported by the Congress, the YSR Congress Party, the Janasena Party and several others. Even though the ruling Telugu Desam Party did not openly announce support the bandh call, TDP leaders, including MLAs, staged demonstrations at various places in the state. Only BJP leaders stayed away from the bandh.
The state government declared a holiday for educational institutions in view of the bandh call and AP State Road Transport Corporation buses did not ply. The bus depots were deserted. Banks did not function at many places. The bandh was peaceful. Leaders of the Left parties were taken into preventive custody in some places.
Cinema halls cancelled morning shows and at most places shops and malls remained closed. YSR Congress Party leader Jagan Mohan Reddy also participated in a demonstration.
