Siraj Hussain, Secretary, Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries, on Friday said that West Bengal should work on quality improvement of aromatic varieties of rice.

According to him, though Bengal is the largest rice producing State in the country, there has not been “much improvement’’ of its better varieties of rice that could be exported.

“There is also a need for overall productivity improvement of rice in the State,’’ he said here while attending a seminar on agri-business organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Hussain added that rice mill owners could diversify into processing other foodgrains.
