West Bengal Left Front chairman Biman Bose today demanded judicial inquiry into the death of SFI leader Sudipto Gupta in police custody.

Bose, who is also the secretary of the state unit of CPI-M, said the party had, however, not yet decided on going to court over the incident.

Bose, who was addressing a press conference here, lambasted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her statement that the student leader was killed when he hit a ‘post’ and that many of her own party workers had died similarly when they had thrust their heads out while travelling by trains.

“The chief minister is also the home minister of the state ... Such a person should know what to say and when,” he said adding her statement on the SFI leader’s death was ’laughable’.

Bose and CPI-M leader Md Selim had demanded judicial inquiry into the death yesterday too.

Gupta, a 22-year-old SFI leader was arrested on April 2 during a rally and law violation programme to demand resumption of college union elections, which had been kept on hold for six months since the violence at a college at Garden Reach in Kolkata that claimed the life of Kolkata police officer in February.

Bose said the SFI demand for resumption of college union polls was ‘very pertinent’ “The college union elections should be held on time.”
