Fifteen Rapid Response teams were today deployed for cleaning the sheds in the Central Poultry Farm in Hesarghatta where avian influenza claimed the lives of 3,600 turkeys in the last fortnight, a top animal husbandry department official said.
“Cleaning activity is in progress. Since, all the birds had been culled, there were no bird available in one km radius for culling,” Secretary of Animal Husbandry Aravinda Jannu said in a statement.
Surveillance work in a 10-km radius was in progress and 74 serum samples and 74 cloacal samples were collected and submitted to the laboratory for investigation.
As many as 13,342 ducks, 369 emus, an ostrich and 11,939 eggs were culled and disposed of yesterday at the Central Poultry Farm.
Meanwhile, a report from Erode in neighbouring Tamil Nadu said animal husbandry officials screened vehicles from Karnataka carrying poultry feed for the poultry farms in the district.
