The BJP has asked the Election Commission to ensure that eligible voters whose names have been deleted from voters’ lists be permitted to cast their ballot in the sixth and seventh phases of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
A delegation of BJP leaders including Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Sudhanshu Trivedi, Balbir Punj and Samit Patra met Election Commission officials on Tuesday.
The sixth and seventh phases of elections to the 403-seat UP Assembly will be held on March 4 and March 8.
In a statement, the BJP said it had received complaints from almost every Assembly constituency where the holders of valid EPICs (Electoral Photo Identity Cards) were turned away as their names had been deleted from voters’ lists. EPICs are normally used for the correct identification of voters.
“None of the voters whose names were deleted received any notice or intimation from the Electoral Registration Officers for the proposed deletion,” the BJP’s statement adds, even as it “requested” the Commission to ensure that all voters with valid EPICs be allowed to vote in the sixth and seven phases of elections in the State.
