BJP demands Telangana Bill in monsoon session

Despite the suspension of MPs from the Seemandhra region, Parliament is unlikely to be peaceful on Monday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the Centre to table the Constitutional amendment Bill on the formation of Telangana State in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.

Rather than bringing in other new Bills, the Centre should focus on the Andhra Pradesh situation as the State is on the brink of violence, it said.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj told reporters here on Saturday that the Government wants to extend the monsoon session to September 5. She said several new Bills, which were not listed earlier, are likely to come up during the time. “I demand that the Government bring the Bill on Telangana and we will support it,” she said.

Blame game

The party had demanded that the Bill should be tabled in the monsoon session so that the Telangana State could be formed and the volatile situation in Andhra Pradesh controlled.

Swaraj said the Government is behaving suspiciously by delaying the implementation of the decision. “Congress and the Government are playing a game here. Congress thought that by announcing the formation of Telangana it will placate the pro-Telangana leaders while the Government, through its inaction on the issue, will placate those standing for a united Andhra Pradesh,” she added.

When asked about the future of the Food Security Bill, she said the debate will take place on Monday.

Both the BJP and the Congress have been accusing each other for the delay in the passage of the Food Bill. She said the BJP was ready to cooperate with the Centre on every issue, but it was the internal differences among the ruling coalition that had led to disruptions. The Congress, on the other hand, has been alleging that the BJP was delaying the Bill as Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was not interested in its passage.
