The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has delayed naming senior party functionaries who are to be given specific responsibilities in the run-up to the State and general elections.
The names were discussed at the party’s Parliamentary Board meeting here on Thursday but were not made public, leading to speculation about differences among the party leaders.
“The names will be released tomorrow. Frankly, even I do not have an idea,” senior party leader and leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley told newspersons.
He said the meeting today discussed “finalising responsibility”.
The board meeting took place to finalise names of poll in-charges and campaign heads for State Assembly polls to be held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi this year-end, as well as sub-committees to assist its campaign head – Narendra Modi – for the 2014 general elections.
Asked what responsibilities would be given, Jaitley said organisational responsibilities had already been fixed in the party and functional responsibilities for looking after issues like the campaign literature, back office, manifesto, information communication etc needed to be finalised.
He said the meeting, which lasted almost two and half hours, had full quorum.
“When such a big meeting is held, a number of issues are discussed like run-up to the elections, political situation, (Parliament) session, latest state of the economy, FDI… all current issues are discussed,” he said.
Asked about what issues were likely to be at the centre-stage during Lok Sabha’s monsoon session, Jaitley said these would include Uttarakhand, security, with particular reference to agencies like IB and Central Bureau of Investigation, and corruption.
The session gets underway on August 5 and is scheduled to end on August 30.
