Jubilation sparked off in the temple town here soon after the BJP on Saturday night announced its Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi as its candidate for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming general elections.
A large number of BJP workers danced and burst crackers in front of the party office at Sigra.
Chanting slogans, they distributed sweets in the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple and chowk area.
BJP workers strongly feel that Modi would be the next MP from Varanasi and become the prime minister. “He would work for the development of the ancient city and also pay heed to the plight of the river Ganges,” said an activist.
Putting to rest all speculation and hoping to boost the party’s prospects in the electorally crucial State, the BJP yesterday night ended the suspense and announced Modi’s candidature from Varanasi.
Modi will replace sitting MP and senior party leader Murli Manohar Joshi, who had been resisting the move. Joshi has been shifted to Kanpur.
