Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will offer Wi-Fi facility at Mangalore International Airport, according to GR Ravi, General Manager, Dakshina Kannada Telecom District of BSNL.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Monday, he said BSNL will provide Wi-Fi coverage with multiple hotspots at select locations in the district. This facility will soon be extended to Mangalore International Airport. The hotspot will allow users ultra-speed broadband internet connectivity, he said.
On the other plans of BSNL in the district, Ravi said plans are afoot to install ‘Next Generation Network’ telephone exchanges at eight locations in the district.
The Next Generation Network will enable services such as voice, video, data, multimedia, broadcasting and multi-casting services, he said.
Under the National Optical Fibre Network project, BSNL will connect 349 village panchayats on optical fibre during the year. He said that around 470 km of optical fibre and other equipment are being installed as a part of this. This project will provide sufficient bandwidth to village panchayats in the revenue districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
Ravi said this would facilitate the ‘Digital India’ programme of the government in providing appropriate infrastructure to the rural areas for extending services using information technology.
