Calcutta HC seeks opinion on time for probe into chit funds scam

The Calcutta High Court on Monday told the amicus curiae (friend of the court) to give its view on whether the State could be given enough time to investigate the multi-crore Saradha scam.

The Court had earlier appointed Laxmi Gupta as amicus curiae in the public interest litigations seeking CBI probe in the Saradha scam.

Hearing a petition, a Division Bench of Justice A. K. Banerjee and Justice M. K. Chaudhuri observed the amicus curiae needs to examine how much time the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the State Government, should be given.

Meanwhile, Ashok Banerjee, appearing on behalf of the State Government, said before the Court that there is no need for a CBI probe.

The SIT has been doing a good job, he added.
