A group of MPs, cutting across party lines, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Wednesday and urged him to confer the Bharat Ratna on Justice VR Krishna Iyer posthumously. They told Modi that Iyer was the most deserving personality for the top civilian honour.
The MPs further said Iyer contributed to the four pillars of Indian democracy — legislative, executive, judiciary and media.
“Till his last breath, Justice Iyer served the cause of the down-trodden, voiceless and marginalised groups,” the MPs said in a letter to the Prime Minister. “He was also a humanitarian, a social reformer and a defender of public interest.”
As an MLA and Minister, he was instrumental in the passage of several people-oriented legislations, the MPs told Modi. CPI(M) MP P Rajeev said Modi has taken their memorandum “positively.”
