The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested film producer Shrikant Mohta for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore ponzi scam .
Mohta owns one of the largest film production houses in eastern India and is said to be a member of the inner circle of the ruling party in West Bengal.
He is alleged to have taken ₹25 crore from another Kolkata-based deposit-taking outfit, the Rose Valley group, for producing films which never hit the floors. Rose Valley Managing Director Gautam Kundu has already been arrested for running an illegal money collection schemes .
According to CBI sources, Mohta has been charged under provisions relating to cheating, criminal conspiracy and fraud. The film producer had skipped multiple summons by the investigation agency and was subsequently detained from his south Kolkata officer this afternoon.
According to a CBI spokesperson, Mohta will be taken to Bhubaneswar for further investigations.
Apart from producing films that have won national awards, Mohta is also known to be the co-founder of a regional language based OTT company.
