The Centre will act in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court to take any decision on the Central Bureau of Investigation deadlock.
“The matter is sub judice before the Supreme Court and any action that is to be taken will be strictly in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court of India in the pending proceedings and not before the Supreme Court decides the matter,” a government official said.
The official was responding to media reports that said the Centre is considering two options to end the alleged policy paralysis in the CBI.
One option being written about was to appoint an Officer on Special Duty of the Director General rank to look after the affairs of the CBI. Another option doing rounds is to place a senior IAS officer in a supervisory role.
“What is stated in the reports are absolutely false,” the official added.
The official also said the Centre has taken the step of divesting the present director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana, as an interim measure, under their powers under Section 4 (2) of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act.
The apex court has to decide on whether the Centre has the powers to strip the CBI Director Alok Verma of his responsibilities.
