A high-level Inter-Ministerial Central team led by TVSN Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, today met the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, her senior cabinet colleagues and government officials before heading to make an on-the-spot assessment of places affected due to the rains.
The team had representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, Finance, Rural Development, Drinking Water and Power from Delhi, representatives of Ministries of Road Transport and Highways and Health from Chennai and Central Water Commission, Ministry of Water Resources from Bengaluru.
The team was deputed following a request from Jayalalithaa to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to assess the extent of damage.
Based on a request from the State Government for financial assistance of nearly ₹2,000 crore, Modi had on Monday immediately released ₹939.63 crore.
Sources in the State Government said that the team will visit places like Tambaram, Mudichur, Raja Kilpakkam and Kovilambakkam. They are expected to visit Cuddalore tomorrow.
