The Centre has decided to approve and support the 26-km-long Vijayawada metro rail project.

The decision was conveyed by M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Urban Development Minister to the State on Thursday.

The Rs 6,800-crore elevated project has been entrusted for development to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has already submitted project details.

However, there were some concerns whether the Vijayawada metro fits the bill for a metro project as it has a population of less than 20 lakh. The support from Centre would entitle the State to access necessary funds and support for the project.

Recently, DMRC as a consultant had submitted a detailed project report for Visakhapatam metro project as well.

The State Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen that both projects are executed by 2018. The State has entrusted the task of development to DMRC with E Sreedharan guiding both the projects.
