The Congress, communist parties and half a dozen farmers associations led by the DMK urged the Centre to take an unbiased view of the Cauvery River water dispute and form the Cauvery Management Board.

Following the discussion led by the DMK Treasurer MK Stalin, the participants resolved that the Tamil Nadu Government should call for a meeting of all the political parties and farmers organisation, convene a special meeting of the Assembly and take a delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to represent Tamil Nadu’s case.

For the first time in five years, farmers in the Delta Districts who have lost the short term `kuruvai’ paddy cultivation due to inadequate irrigation water are facing the loss of the long term 'Samba’ crop also.

Karnataka which should have released 192 tmcft in the current year has released just 34 tmcft of water. The Government has also not heeded the directions of the Supreme Court in this regard.

The participants also resolved that the Centre should act in line with the Inter State Water Disputes Act 1956 and use its authority to constitute a Cauvery Water Distribution Regulatory Committee to oversee the sharing of the river water.

In a separate press release, the DMK said it will support the 48-hour `rail roko’ demonstration of the farmers associations planned on October 17 and 18 demanding the formation of the Cauvery Management Board.
