In Chhattisgarh, the BJP braved all the tricks of the Congress to win nine out of the 10 seats.

In Mahasamund, where senior Congress leader Ajit Jogi contested, BJP candidate Chandu Lal Sahu had to face 13 Independent candidates with his name. The 11 candidates together got about 1 lakh votes and the BJP candidate won by 1,556 votes. However, the official declaration of the result was held back as Jogi, a former chief minister, sought a recount.

The BJP improved its position when compared to the Assembly elections. Seven of the party’s candidates got a margin of more than 1.5 lakh votes. The BJP has been projecting Chhattisgarh as a model government in terms of agriculture production and public distribution.

The only seat bagged by the Congress other than Mahasamund was Durg, won by Tamradwaj Sahu. He defeated the BJP’s national women’s cell chief Saroj Pandey.
