The Enforcement Directorate on Monday attached Karti Chidambaram’s assets valued at more than ₹1 crore, prompting his father and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram to question the agency’s actions.
The senior Chidambaram said the ED’s statement on the matter “cleverly skirts” the issue of its jurisdiction, when the only charge-sheet filed in the Aircel-Maxis case was quashed by a special judge.
“The FIPB officials examined by the CBI have affirmed that the FIPB, consisting of Secretaries to the Government of India, correctly approved and recommended the case and placed the minutes before the Finance Minister (who was the competent authority) for approval. Approval was granted in the normal course,” he said in a statement. Chidambaram said the charges in the ED’s press note were a “crazy mixture” of falsehoods and conjectures. .
