Chiranjeevi resigns from Union Cabinet

Union Minister of State with Independent charge of Tourism, K. Chiranjeevi today resigned from the Manmohan Singh Cabinet.

In a letter to the PM, he said “The decision of the Cabinet to go ahead with the division of the State of A.P. ignoring the unprecedented people’s movement in Seemandhra region against the division, has compelled me to tender the resignation”.

I request you to accept my resignation, the letter said.

The megastar of Telugu cinema, who floated a party called Praja Rajyam Party won 18 seats in the 294 strong A.P. Legislative Assembly in 2009 to emerge as the third largest after Cong(I) and TDP.  In 2011 he merged it with the Cong(I), at a critical juncture in State politics and literally saved the present Kiran Kumar Reddy Government.

Chiranjeevi, became a Rajya Sabha member and was rewarded with the Tourism Ministry in Manmohan’s Cabinet in October 2012.
