It was party time for DMK supporters as news broke of the acquittal.

Crowds started gathering outside the residence of the K Kanimozhi, DMK MP in the Rajya Sabha, who along with former Union Communications and Telecom Minister, A Raja, also of DMK, is among the accused in the case.

At 10.45am a loud cheer broke out as a party worker waiting outside Kanimozhi’s house received word of acquittal. She, of course, was away in Delhi at the Special Court.

Almost instantly sweet boxes appeared in the crowd and were distributed, garlands of firecrackers were rolled out on the streets and the residential colony reverberated to the sound of fireworks.

Outside the house of the DMK Working President and Opposition Leader MK Stalin too crowds had gathered.

Around 11.15 am, a beaming Stalin came out of his house and distributed sweets to the supporters and media persons waiting outside his house.

Reacting to the verdict, he said the historical verdict in the 2G case “foisted” in 2009 overturns a conspiracy to “humiliate and destroy” the DMK. “All the accused have been acquitted by the Special Court” and he is “happy that the verdict has showed the DMK has done no wrong.” He urged the media to “highlight and play up” the verdict as much as it had when the case had been filed against the DMK leaders.

He then left for ‘Anna Arivalayam’ the DMK party headquarters. More party workers arrived. Senior leader and DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan greeted Stalin.

Welcoming the verdict, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President S Thirunavukkarasar said that a big disturbing factor for the Congress Party has disappeared.

The accusation was a weapon used by the BJP against the Congress. Now, the Congress and its alliance partner DMK have come out clean with this judgment.
