The Indian Coast Guard helped save 46 lives in 14 search and rescue operations in Karnataka in 2015.
A press release issued by the Coast Guard headquarters at Panambur in New Mangalore said on Monday that the Coast Guard has been gradually expanding in Karnataka. At present, the No. 3 Coast Guard District Headquarters has strength of four fast-patrol vessels, two hovercrafts, two interceptor boats and two interceptor craft.
In future, an offshore patrol vessel with integrated helicopter and a squadron of maritime reconnaissance aircraft will be based in Karnataka, it said.
On Monday, No. 3 Coast Guard District Headquarters celebrated the Raising Day of Indian Coast Guard Headquarters at Panambur in New Mangalore. Karnataka has 320-km-long coastline.
