Reposing faith in the apex court, the Congress said on Wednesday that it is ready to prove its majority in the Assembly. Calling the dissidence of party MLAs an “internal problem”, the party said its leaders are talking to 14 MLAs camping here with a complaint against Nabam Tuki, who was the Chief Minister.

Talking to reporters, Congress general secretary in-charge of North Eastern States V Narayanasamy said the party does not want to comment on the President’s decision to accept the Cabinet’s recommendation seeking imposition of President’s rule in the border State. “I do not want to make any comment on that because whatever the President decided, it is on record,” he said.

Narayanasamy said the dissidence in the party will be dealt with by the high command. He said the dissident MLAs themselves have claimed that they are Congressmen. “Where is the question of defection? They are all Congressmen; there can be a difference of opinion and it can be resolved within our system. But what is the role of the BJP? Why should the BJP interfere in our party’s affairs,” he asked.

He said the Centre and the Governor created the crisis. “The Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers requested him that the Session be convened on 14 January, but the Governor acted on his own and convened the session on 16 December.

‘RSS agenda being pushed’

“If we see North Eastern States, only RSS- backed, RSS-minded persons were appointed as Governors. This shows the sinister design of Narendra Modi government to dislodge constitutionally elected Congress governments in the North Eastern States,” he added.

Party spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Raj Babbar said devious attempts are being made by the BJP, which had just 11 MLAs as compared to Congress’s strength of 47 MLAs and a vote share of 58.5 per cent.

“Despite the ugly game of destabilising, Congress still has a clear majority and a strength of 31 MLAs in the House of 60,” he added. Two MLAs have resigned from the Assembly and 14 were disqualified by the Speaker invoking the anti-defection law.

Narayanasamy further said that the 11 BJP MLAs and dissident Congress MLAs were in a hotel here. “This shows that the BJP has actually got (engineered) the defection in the Congress and today they are saying they have a majority,” he said.
