Congress party is planning to enrol 50 lakh members in Karnataka by February 15, according to Ivan D’Souza, an MLC representing Congress in Karnataka.
Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said that the membership drive of the party, which should have been ended by December, has been extended up to February 15.
Earlier, the party had given a target of enrolling 50 members from each booth. Now the target has been increased to 100 members from each booth. The objective is to enrol 50 lakh members in the state by February 15.
In Dakshina Kannada district, the party will enrol 1.75 lakh members under this drive, he said.
Stating that the BJP believes in ‘missed calls’ to enrol members, he said Congress party believes in meeting the people at their doorsteps to enrol them as members.
(It may be mentioned here that the BJP has initiated a nationwide membership drive where the interested persons can contact the party by giving a missed call to a dedicated number)
'Amit Shah' effect
Asked about the ‘Amit Shah effect’ on the move to extend the membership drive till February, he said the party wants to strengthen its base when the rural local bodies such as village panchayats go for elections in the middle of 2015.
The BJP National President, Amit Shah, who was in Bengaluru recently, has set a target of one crore new members under the party’s membership drive.
