The pressure of crowds eased considerably at the ghats here on Wednesday on the second day of the Godavari Maha Pushkaram as things are returning to normal after the tragedy yesterday.
On Tuesday, 27 pilgrims lost their lives in a stampede at the pushkar ghat, sending shock waves across the nation. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu as well as the Director-General of Police JV Ramudu are in town monitoring the situation.
The injured pilgrims were discharged on Wednesday and they were each given ex gratia of ₹25,000.
In the aftermath of Tuesday’s incident, the State is under great pressure to conduct the fete smoothly on the remaining days. The conduct of VIPs in particular has come under scrutiny, as Opposition leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and several others blamed the Chief Minister for the mishap.
