Darjeeling remained tense on Wednesday with sporadic incidents of violence being reported from the district, even as the strike call pressing for a separate Gorkhaland State entered its 35th day.
The Gorkhaland Movement Coordination Committee (GMCC) — consisting of all the hill parties, including the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) — had earlier decided to shift its agitation to Delhi beginning August. The GJM, which remains at the forefront of the statehood stir, is also an ally of the BJP.
“GMCC will meet in Delhi on August 1,” Roshan Giri, GJM Secretary, said.
Giri also denied reports of Bimal Gurung leaving for Delhi.
Meanwhile, a TMC party office was set ablaze, allegedly by pro-Gorkhaland supporters and a police vehicle torched. Late on Tuesday, a century-old Bengali community was also burnt down in the Kurseong area.
