The Union government’s ‘surgical strike’ on terror camps and ‘demonetisation’ of ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes were among the ‘top trending news events’ on Google during 2016.

Other events that got the attention of India on Google were ‘7th Pay Commission’, ‘BRICS summit’, ‘Zika virus’, ‘Brexit’, ‘US Elections’ and ‘Rio 2016 Olympics’.

Google posted ‘Year in Search: 2016’ on its website on Wednesday.

The US President-elect ‘Donald Trump’ figured among others in the categories of ‘top trending searches’ and ‘top trending people’ during 2016.

The Rio Olympics medal winner ‘PV Sindhu’, Tamil superstar Rajnikant’s movie Kabali , the Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s Sultan , and the controversial Bollywood movie Udta Punjab figured among the ‘top 10 trending searches’ for 2016 in India. Others in this list included ‘Pokemon Go’ and ‘iPhone7’.

The Bollywood actors such as Disha Patani, heroine of MS Dhoni: The Untold Story , and Pooja Hegde of the movie Mohenjo Daro ; Olympians such as Sindhu, Dipa Karamkar and Sakshi Malik; and the industrialist Vijay Mallya also figured in the ‘top trending people’ category during 2016.

Some of the ‘top trending movies’ on Google search in India included Akshay Kumar’s Airlift , Rustom , Houseful 3 , and the Marathi movie Sairat , along with Sultan , Kabali , and Udta Punjab .

The new generation actors have overtaken the seniors when it comes to ‘top trending Bollywood actors’. Sushant Singh Rajput (who played the cricketer MS Dhoni in his biopic), actor Anil Kapoor’s son Harshavardhan Kapoor, Ranveer Singh (who played Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani) were some names in ‘top trending Bollywood actors (male)’ category. Salman Khan, whose name figured among the top trending male actors in 2015, was also in the list during 2016.
