The DMK has dismissed MK Alagiri from the party, according to a statement from party General Secretary K Anbazhagan.
Alagiri, son of DMK Chief M Karunanidhi, had been suspended from the party for indiscipline. He was then the DMK’s south zone secretary.
In an impromptu interaction with the media at the DMK party office this morning, Karunanidhi said Alagiri, who had been suspended from the party earlier, had not responded to the show-cause notice but continued to “increasingly criticise” the DMK and its senior leaders.
Alagiri, who is considered a major power centre in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, had been suspended for indiscipline in January. At that time he had spoken out against the DMK trying to work out a poll alliance with the Vijayakanth-led DMDK.
In recent days, senior leaders from other parties have called on Alagiri, seeking his support.
