The Election Commission has written to AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala, asking her to send a response signed by an authorised office bearer who is on the list submitted by the party to the Commission.
In its communication, the Commission pointed out that five different communications were received from AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran, in response to three letters written by the Commission to the party.
The poll panel’s letters were in response to action demanded by a faction of the party, which stated that the party had no provisions to pick an interim general secretary, and so Sasikala’s appointment was invalid.
They also stressed that all appointments made by Sasikala were also illegal. Sasikala was appointed interim General Secretary late last year, in a unanimous resolution adopted by the party at its General Council meeting.
The latest communication by the EC states that Dinakaran is not an office bearer of the AIADMK as per its records. “Communications from the party should be signed by an authorised office bearer. Hence the reply should be submitted under your own signature or you may duly authorise somebody to do so on your behalf,” the Commission has said in its communication to Sasikala, who is presently lodged in a Bengaluru prison after being convicted by the Supreme Court in a disproportionate assets case.
Sasikala has been given time till March 10 to send a response.
In its letter dated February 17 to Sasikala, the Commission had said that if she did not respond to the letter, the Commission would “presume that you have nothing to offer and the Commission will take appropriate action in the matter.”
