Energy Efficiency Services Ltd has enlisted members of women self-help groups (SHGs) for distribution of energy-efficient bulbs, tube-lights and fans.

Energy Services Company (ESCO) will supply lights, tube-lights and fans as a part of its energy conservation move to the SHGs. They in turn will distribute them to consumers. In return, they will get a commission of ₹10 per bulb, ₹12 per tube light and ₹102 per fan.

About 50,000 women from SHGs will be encouraged to be part of the project in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits, Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director of EESL, said.

It is proposed to distribute over one crore LED bulbs in Telangana to popularise the use of these efficient lights. Consumers can purchase a 9 watt bulb at ₹70, 20 watt tube light at ₹230 and energy efficient fan at ₹1,150 each.

Apart from women SHGs, these bulbs can be purchased at MEE Seva centres, who would in turn facilitate supply of these in other locations. Under the Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for ALL (Ujala) scheme, thus far more than 12 lakh LED bulbs, 21 thousand energy efficient fans and one lakh LED tube lights have been sold.

The adoption of these has resulted in annual cost savings of ₹65 crore on consumer bills, annual energy saving of 16 crore kWh and reduction of 1.3 lakh tonnes of CO2.

EESL will execute a major ₹270 crore street-light replacement project in Hyderabad, one of the biggest such projects, from July wherein 4.5 lakh street lights will be replaced and maintained for seven years.

The funding and implementation for the project would be by EESL. And from the energy saving over the next seven years, EESL will get back its investment as a service company, Saurabh Kumar said.

Prior to this, about 6 lakh street lights were replaced in 11 local bodies in Andhra Pradesh. And similar initiatives are being taken up in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, North East among other States. It has also initiated a project which facilitates replacement of old air-conditioners with energy efficient ACs.
