The Emerging Kerala 2012 Global Connect event will promote the vision of sustainable development and environment-friendly technologies.

This also forms the core of the state government’s long-term growth strategy, according to Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty.

GREEN DEVELOPMENT

“We will make sure that industrial and economic development does not come at the expense of the environment,” he added.

This is clear from the 26 areas being showcased to global delegates at the Emerging Kerala event.

They include IT and IT-enabled services, tourism and medical tourism, healthcare services, food and agro processing, knowledge and education, green energy, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

The state wants to demonstrate to the rest of the world that integration of environment and development can be achieved with success, said Mr V. Somasundaram, additional chief secretary, industries.

TOURISM SECTOR

Kerala’s tourism sector, which thrives on the state’s reputation as a green haven, is another area poised for rapid growth.

Other areas falling into this category include banking and financial services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, light engineering, trade and retailing, textiles, water technologies, waste management and research and educational excellence.

Sectors such as power, transport, urban amenities, industrial units, manufacturing plants, airports, seaports are also being planned to suit state’s unique geography and needs, sais Alkesh Sharma, secretary, industries.

Proposed projects such as the life sciences park, oceanarium, food parks, agro-based industries, ayurveda development centres, renewable energy also help protect the environment and preserve our biodiversity.
