The Union Environment Ministry will direct the Karnataka Government to protect the lakes of Bengaluru.

Replying to a query on the recent incident of fire in a Bengaluru lake at a press conference in Mangaluru on Thursday, Prakash Javdekar, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest, said that his ministry will soon issue a directive to the State Government in this regard.

Stressing the need to protect lakes and wetlands, he quoted his interactions with the citizens of Bengaluru during the recent national executive of BJP where he found the constructions around the lakes of the city.

Bengaluru is a lake city, which is a treasure. The city corporation should not have allowed constructions around the lake. “I don’t know whether they have allowed or builders are doing it illegally. But their sewage goes into the lakes,” he said.

His ministry has sent a special team to look into this matter. “We will take corrective action. We will give direction to the State Government, and we will give directions to the corporation,” he said.
